Meet Anne
Anne Higgins, LCSW
(She/Her)
I’m a proud member of the LGBTQ community, have roots in Minnesota and have called Montana home for the last 12 years.
In sessions, I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where clients feel safe to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. My style is characterized by a balance of casualness and challenge, infused with humor and real-life examples. Together, we collaborate to address a variety of concerns, such as life transitions, self-acceptance, relationships, anxiety, sexuality, and more. Expect sessions to be dynamic and engaging, with a focus on promoting risk-taking, self-acceptance, and emotional authenticity.

My therapeutic approach is deeply rooted in a multidisciplinary perspective, recognizing the intricate interplay of environment, psychology, physiology, and our personal history in shaping mental health and well-being. Trained in various modalities, including EMDR, CBT, DBT, HeartMath, and Somatic Attachment, I am committed to holistic healing. Sometimes that looks like processing trauma in the office and sometimes that looks like doing the hard things together and going out into the world, to play, grieve, and celebrate. I create a nurturing space for clients to explore their experiences, foster resilience, and cultivate self-awareness.

With a wealth of clinical expertise focused on adolescents and their families, my journey spans various therapeutic settings, from crisis shelters to wilderness therapy programs, inpatient psychiatric care, adolescent residential facilities, and transitional care programs. I hold a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Montana and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from St. Olaf College.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): A therapy technique used to help people heal from traumatic experiences. It involves recalling distressing memories while the therapist directs the client's eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This process helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional impact.
Walk and Talk Therapy: A transformative approach blending mindfulness with body-oriented techniques, designed to ease relaxation, alleviate rumination, and foster profound mind-body insights amidst the serenity of nature. Unlike conventional therapy settings, clients engage in therapeutic conversations while strolling outdoors, fostering a comfortable and liberating environment for self-expression.
DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy): A type of therapy that combines cognitive behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. DBT focuses on teaching clients skills to manage their emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and cope with distressing situations.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): A widely used therapy approach that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. It helps clients develop coping strategies to deal with various mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and phobias. CBT is goal-oriented and typically involves homework assignments and practical exercises.
Somatic Attachment: Somatic: A body-oriented approach that explores the connection between past attachment experiences and present physical sensations and emotions. It helps individuals understand how early attachment patterns may manifest in their bodies and relationships. Through techniques such as breathwork, movement, and touch, clients learn to regulate their nervous system and develop healthier attachment patterns.
HeartMath: A scientifically-based program focused on self-regulation techniques to manage stress and improve emotional well-being. It emphasizes the connection between the heart and brain and teaches clients to use heart-focused breathing and other techniques to reduce stress, increase resilience, and enhance emotional coherence. HeartMath is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities to promote overall well-being.
